I am utterly exhausted today. I actually had a fairly good night’s sleep, but I suspect that a week of sub-par slumber has finally caught up with me. I thought that there could be a quick achievement that I wasn’t quite understanding in Flock!, which I already had questions about from the other day, but after about 15 minutes of herding sheep, I just gave up and went with a quick session of a title from this month’s Games with Gold, Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide.

Now, I don’t entirely understand Warhammer. But what I do know of it is that they have awesome miniatures. Even in my adult years, a walk past Games Workshop brings with it a pang of nostalgia for my formative years, where fantasy and sci-fi reigned supreme. I can’t quite workout the relationship between orcs and elves and dwarves and space marines wielding chainsaw guns, but I suspect that there is some personal growth to be had in playing Vermintide.

Perhaps what surprised me initially was seeing that this game was a first person affair. I thought that the Warhammer games would largely resemble an RTS, tabletop style, but instead my heart filled as my Elder Scrolls-loving bones vibrated in joy as the tutorial opened with a dual-wielding protagonist front and centre.

I’m not sure if I’ve even technically ‘finished’ the tutorial yet, as I think there’s an achievement for that as well, but my eyes are already droopy and I’ve got dinner to cook and kids to shower and read stories for, so today was as much about life priorities as it was finding something new to play. I’d like to find some time to keep going with Vermintide, as it seems to have a good vibe that resonates with me, though it will depend if my ignorance of the story and my appetite for a long narrative can be sustained. Time will ultimately tell.
